SUNNYVALE (California) – YAHOO Inc supports rival Google’s threatened departure from China because of computer attacks that pried into the e-mail accounts of human rights activists.

In a statement on Wednesday, Yahoo said it is ‘aligned’ with Google’s reaction to the hacking that originated within China.

Google has promised to stop censoring its search results in China, defying the country’s government. The move may result in Google pulling out of China completely.

Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, closed its offices in China in 2005 when it sold its business there to the Alibaba Group. As part of that deal, Yahoo retains a 39 per cent stake in Alibaba that represents one of Yahoo’s most valuable assets.

Yahoo spokesman Nina Blackwell declined on Wednesday to say whether its solidarity with Google would cause the company to sell its Alibaba holdings.

Before selling its Chinese business, Yahoo’s cooperation with the Chinese government angered human rights activists and US lawmakers. Much of the scalding criticism focused on Yahoo’s role in the jailing of two Chinese journalists. The evidence against them included e-mail that Yahoo turned over to the Chinese government. — AP

ZURICH will be the next stop for Singapore Airlines’s Airbus 380 superjumbo.

From March 28, SIA will operate daily flights to the Swiss city using the double-decker jet.

This will replace the existing 12 flights a week that are now operated using the smaller Boeing 737-300ER aircraft.

Zurich will be the third city in Europe and the seventh in the airline’s network to receive the A380.

SIA, the first commercial airliner to operate the aircraft, now flies it to Sydney, London, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong and Melbourne.

The airline currently has 10 A380s in service and nine more coming.

About 10 FairPrice staff on Thursday visited the Ren Ci Community Hospital, which is located beside Tan Tock Seng Hospital at Irrawady Road, to interact with patients by helping them with arts and craft, such as making Chinese New Year cards.

Chairman for NTUC FairPrice Foundation and NTUC FairPrice Ng Ser Miang said the foundation has taken the lead to drive support as Ren Ci’s cause is in line with the foundation’s strategic thrust to help the less fortunate.

The foundation, a registered charity launched by NTUC FairPrice in March 2008, has given more than $15 million to 300 organisations. It focuses on causes to help the poor and needy, nation-building and community bonding and workers’ welfare. It is the first time the foundation has made a donation to Ren Ci. Said Mr Ng: ‘Given recent developments, we foresee that Ren Ci is likely to face challenges in continuing its operations and will benefit from every possible help it can get.’

The community hospital was officially opened on Jan 11.

THOSE who drive or cab to the Marina Sands integrated resort or Marina Bay Financial Centre will face a new set of electronic road-pricing gantries planned for the area.

The Land Transport Authority announced on Thursday that four new gantries will be set up in Marina Centre, north of the East Coast Parkway, as the area is part of an enlarged Central Business District. An existing gantry in Central Boulevard will be removed.

The four new gantries are in Marina Way (an exit road from the Ayer Rajah Expressway); Marina Station Road (near the new MRT station); and two on either direction of the new three-lane dual-carriageway Bay Bridge that links the new business and entertainment hub to Raffles Avenue.

The additions bring the number of ERP gantries in the CBD from 39 to 36.

LTA chief executive Yam Ah Mee said the new gantries are necessary because they form a cordon around the expanded CBD. Without them, motorists will use the new roads there to bypass congestion-priced roads in the city centre, he added.

The erection of the new gantries will be done in stages. The first one on the Bay Bridge leading out of Marina Centre will be up in April, while the others will up some time in the third quarter. The Marina Sands resort is expected to open from April, while the Marina Bay Financial Centre is due to open by the third quarter.

A COOL sensation will descend over Singapore this afternoon with a solar eclipse said to be the longest of its kind in the next 1,000 years.

At its peak over the Indian Ocean, it will last for just over 11 minutes.

In Singapore, it will last from about 3.10pm to 5.30pm, with the best viewing time at about 4.25pm.

The Singapore Science Centre will set up its giant telescope and host various activities to mark the event. It usually attracts a few hundred people to watch such eclipses. It will also hand out free solar glasses through which the eclipse can be viewed safely.

‘There will definitely be something worth seeing and people will experience a cool sensation on the skin as there will be a dip in radiation from the sun. It will feel like the sun in more temperate climates,’ said the centre’s outgoing chief executive, Dr Chew Tuan Chiong.

Friday’s eclipse is an annular one – the moon will pass in front of the sun, but will not block it completely, as in a total eclipse. Instead, there will be a ring of fire, or a solar ring, visible around the edge of the darkened moon.

SINGAPORE government will contribute US$50,000 (S$69,423) to the international community’s humanitarian relief efforts for Haiti, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

President SR Nathan also wrote to Haitian President Rene Preval on Thursday to convey his sympathies to the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday.

‘On behalf of the people of Singapore, I would like to convey my sympathy o all victims of the earthquake, especially to those who have suffered the tragic loss of their loved ones.

‘I am confident that with your leadership and the assistance of the international community, Haiti will recover from this catastrophic event.’

More than 100,000 people were feared dead in Haiti on Wednesday after a calamitous earthquake razed homes, hotels, and hospitals, leaving the capital in ruins and bodies strewn in the streets.

Malaysian authorities have extended the use of the Malaysian Automated Clearance System (Macs) to day-trippers who head north more than four times in a month.

Those who get the Macs pass will have a sticker in their passport which will be scanned on entry and departure.

They do not need to fill in the immigration cards or have their passport stamps as all this information is captured in a computer system.

The pass cost RM30 (S$12.50) and is available at the two immigration complexes at the Causeway and Second Link.

It is valid for a year before it needs to be renewed.

LOS ANGELES – CASEY Johnson, heiress to the Johnson & Johnson business empire and ‘fiancee’ of reality TV star Tila Tequila, was found dead on Monday night, reports said. She was 30.

A spokesman for the family and police confirmed the death of the socialite daughter of New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, first reported by TMZ.com.

Last month, Johnson and Singapore-born Tequila, a Vietnamese-American, announced their engagement in a rambling Web video of themselves in bed wearing only bras and panties.

Police officers responded to Johnson’s Los Angeles home around 11.51am, where paramedics had already pronounced her dead, a police spokesman said. She said she did not know how long Johnson might have been dead by the time the authorities arrived.

She said Johnson’s death may have been from natural causes since a preliminary investigation turned up no signs of foul play. A final cause of death is pending toxicology reports.

A statement from the family says it ‘is mourning its tragic loss, and asks for privacy during this very difficult time’. Tequila, 28, said on Twitter: ‘Everyone please pray 4 my Wifey Casey Johnson. She has passed away.’

ALHAMBRA (California) – THE fight against fat is going high-tech. To get an inside look at eating and exercise habits, scientists are developing wearable wireless sensors to monitor overweight and obese people as they go about their daily lives.

The experimental devices are designed to keep track of how many minutes they work out, how much food they consume and even whether they are at a fast-food joint when they should be in the park. The goal is to cut down on self-reported answers that often cover up what’s really happening.

In a lab in this Los Angeles suburb, two overweight teenagers help test the devices by taking turns sitting, standing, lying down, running on a treadmill and playing Wii. As music thumps in the background, wireless sensors on their chests record their heart rates, stress levels and amount of physical activity. The information is sent to a cell phone. ‘I can’t feel my legs,’ 15-year-old Amorette Castillo groans after her second treadmill run.

Traditional weight-loss interventions rely mainly on people’s memory of what they ate for dinner and how many minutes they worked out. But researchers have long known that method can be unreliable since people often forget details or lie.

The new devices are being designed in labs or created with off-the-shelf parts. Some similar instruments are already on the market, including a model that tracks calories burned by measuring motion, sweat and heat with armbands. But the devices in development aim to be more sophisticated by featuring more precise electronics and sometimes even video cameras. Many emerging systems also strive to provide instant feedback and personalised treatment for wearers.

At the University of Southern California lab, the teens alternated between being sedentary and active as researchers resolved the technical bugs. Later this year, some will wear the body sensors at home on weekends. If they get too lazy, they will get pinged with a text message. ‘We’ll be able to know real-time if they’re inactive, if they’re active,’ said Donna Spruijt-Metz, a USC child obesity expert in charge of the project. — AP
